Q: When did you know you wanted to be a surgeon? What sealed the deal for you?
A: It was at the age of 20. I was observing surgeons during a summer internship at Doctors Hospital. The surgeons and their personalities enthralled me; it was fascinating to see what they did for their patients and to have the opportunity to observe their surgical skills. Dr. Jim Walt influenced me and so did Dr. Ben Lincoln.
Q: What procedure do you do most frequently? Do you have a favorite?
A: My favorite procedure is a total knee replacement. It is a mechanically-based procedure that enhances function and immediately corrects deformity and relieves pain. I also enjoy helping patients with hip and shoulder problems.
Q: How did you decide to start Arkansas Surgical Hospital?
A: A group of surgeons got together based on their desire to provide the best in surgical care in a friendly, patient-driven environment. The mission of Arkansas Surgical Hospital is to enhance the quality of life for our patients, physicians, employees, and community through safe, high-quality, high-value care.
Q: How does a physician-owned hospital differ from corporate-owned facilities?
A: Physician-owned hospitals have direct control over the operation of the hospital, and that improves outcomes and patient experience. We respond to issues quickly and effectively within a short chain of command. Our lean structure allows us to respond quickly to the ever-changing healthcare landscape—a benefit to our patients.
Q: What is the one problem you are best at solving for your patients?
A: I explain technical issues in plain everyday language, so that our patients feel comfortable with the process and decisions they make concerning their healthcare.
Q: What are you most passionate about personally? What do you really enjoy doing?
A: I do really enjoy being in the outside environment of Central Arkansas. I enjoy running biking and swimming in area lakes. I love the American West, particularly the Colorado Rockies; and traveling and experiencing new environments and cultures. I also like scuba diving as well as snow skiing and other mountain sports.
Q: What are you most passionate about professionally?
A: I am passionate about being able to evaluate and assess a patient’s painful orthopedic condition and then explain it to them, creating a plan and executing the plan whether it involves surgery or not—to that patient’s satisfaction. It is exciting to help a patient return to improved function and a more active lifestyle!
Q: How do you want to be remembered?
A: As an understanding and compassionate physician who highly valued his patients’ healthcare.
